We Remember: 25 years since the Iranian terror attack on AMIA Jewish center in Argentina

On this day 25 years ago, on July 18, 1994, an Iranian-backed suicide bomber drove a van loaded with about 275 kilograms of explosives into the Jewish Community Center (AMIA) building in Buenos Aires, murdering 85 people and injuring 150 more, in the largest terror attack in Argentine history.

The sorrow and grief caused by this terror attack are compounded by the fact that those responsible for this horrifying act have not yet been brought to justice.

After years of investigation, the Argentinian magistrate concluded in 2007 that Iran and Hezbollah were behind the terror attack and responsible for dispatching the murderers.

The government of Argentina appealed to Interpol to issue arrest warrants for a number of terrorists, and this appeal was approved by the Interpol General Assembly.

In 2018 a Federal Judge ruled that former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, along with 11 other high-profile officials and associates with her government who have been indicted, will stand trial for covering up Iran’s role in the 1994 AMIA terror attack in exchange for trade deals, like late prosecutor Alberto Nisman had accused her of before being murdered.

Analysts have also concluded that the late prosecutor Nisman was “murdered in cold blood,” and that the crime scene had been tampered with in order to make it look like he had committed suicide.

Argentinian authorities announced today that they have designated Hezbollah as a terror organization, an ordered the freezing of the Lebanese terror group’s assets in the country.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who has pushed for the move along with Prime Minister Netanyahu, is currently in Argentina.

“Israel condemns Iran for its responsibility for terrorist attacks around the world and for funding, instructing, training and arming terror organizations and for threatening to wipe Israel off the face of the earth.

At this difficult hour, the people and government of Israel identify with the bereaved families, with the Jewish community in Argentina and with all the people of Argentina. Concurrently, we would like to congratulate the Jewish community, which has managed to recover from the tragic event, to restore the community and maintain firm ties with the State of Israel. Furthermore, we endorse the Argentinian government’s efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice”, the MFA Spokesperson said in a statement.
