It’s believed at least 18 of the country’s 23 states, including the capital Caracas, have lost power on Monday.

Information Minister Jorge Rodrigues claimed the power cut was caused by an “electromagnetic attack” and officials were working to restore power.

He appealed for calm and said contingency plans had been activated so that medical facilities would not be affected. Security forces were also being deployed to guarantee public safety.

In March Venezuela was hit by a series of power cuts, including one that affected all 23 states and lasted a week, leading to shortages and riots.

Blackouts are common in Venezuela, where the economy has collapsed under dictator Maduro. He and other state officials have in the past pointed the finger of blame for his failed socialist country, at the White House, while blaming “terrorism” and opposition sabotage.
