PA security forces thwart major bombing attack near Tel Aviv – Jerusalem highway

The Palestinian Authority security forces recently thwarted a terror attack on Route 443, a major Israeli highway linking Tel Aviv with Jerusalem.

An explosive device made of two gas canisters, an explosive charge and a tool that contained a large number of nails, was found by the PA police south of Route 443.

The bomb was hidden on the side of the road in Area C, which is under full Israeli control.

The bomb was placed in a location where IDF vehicles regularly carry out routine patrolling on their way to the Arab villages in the area.

The bomb type is reminiscent of explosive devices used in the past by the Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad terror group, experts say. The size of the bomb suggested an intention that the terror attack was supposed to be extremely powerful and to inflict many casualties.

It is suspected that the bombing attack was not only intended to harm IDF soldiers, but also to thwart negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

Last week, PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas criticized the emerging ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Abbas fears that an agreement between Israel and Hamas will strengthen Hamas status in Gaza and that he will be pushed to the sidelines.

Earlier this year, the PA security forces uncovered and detonated 12 explosive devices weighed 40kg each, and connected with electric cables, on a road near Tulkarem. The bombs were placed by Muslim terrorists in order to harm IDF troops patrolling the area.
