Muslim terrorist who planned to assassinate Netanyahu and Jerusalem Major sentenced to 11 years

A Muslim terrorist resident of the Shuafat neighborhood of Jerusalem has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for planning a terror attack against PM Netanyahu and other senior officials, including former Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat.

Muhammad Jamal Rashdeh, a 31-year-old Muslim terrorist with Israeli citizenship who already served time in jail for terrorism, was arrested in April and charged with terror offenses.

Most of the details of the case are under a gag order, the information cleared for publication states that Rashdeh was being handled by terrorists in Syria.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the terrorist planned a “significant terror attack” against a number of targets, including senior Israeli officials like Netanyahu and Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat.

The terrorists member of the cell never met, no money was transferred and no arms were purchased for the end of the attack. The arrest was done at an initial stage of the planning process.

The terrorist also planned to attack the structures belonging to the US Embassy in Jerusalem and a Canadian delegation visiting Jerusalem as part of a training program for the Palestinian Authority security forces. He began collecting information to advance the plan, acting on the Syrian’s terrorist orders.

According to the Shin Bet, the plan also included bringing in “terrorist infrastructure” from Jordan to Judea and Samaria.

Attorney Shachar Malul of the Jerusalem District of the State Attorney’s Office said, “The sentence reflects the severity of the crimes the defendant committed, which included [attempts] to harm state security and the delicate fabric of life in Israel.

“The State Attorney’s Office will continue to take determined action to bring anyone who tries to damage the security of Israel and its residents to justice,” Malul said.
