Muslim terrorist behind Givat Assaf, Ofra shooting attacks captured alive
The Muslim terrorist behind the shooting attacks near the Jewish communities of Givat Assaf and Ofra in which two IDF soldiers and a 3-day-old baby were murdered, was captured alive Monday overnight.
The terrorist has been identified as 29-year-old Assam Barghouti, from the Barghouti clan of Jihadists.
Two combat soldiers, Sgt. Yossi Cohen and Staff Sgt. Yovel Mor-Yosef were murdered and two others were wounded in the Givat Assaf terror attack.
A week earlier, Muslim terrorists attempted to murder Israelis, including a pregnant woman, in a drive-by shooting attack near Ofra Junction. A 7-month baby born prematurely died after three days of efforts by doctors to save his life.
Assam’s brother, Salah, who carried out the Ofra attack, was shot and eliminated by security forces during an attempt to arrest him later same week.
Their 17-year-old brother Mohammed was arrested on Saturday for involvement in the terror attacks.
The latest arrest was made in the Arab village of Abu Shukheidim, north of Ramallah, at the home of one of Barghouti’s accomplices following intensive intelligence collection by the Shin Bet, Border Police and IDF forces.
The forces found a gun, ammunition and night-vision devices at his hideout. According to the Shin Bet’s statement, the Muslim terrorist was planning further terror attacks in order to murder Jews.
Assam Barghouti, originally from the terror nest of Kobar, north of Ramallah, comes from a Hamas-affiliated family of Jihadists. He had spent 11 years in Israeli prisons over terrorism-related crimes, including planning to abduct soldiers.
Assam and Salah are sons of Omar Barghouti, a senior Hamas terrorist who spent 28 years in Israeli prisons.
“Several hours ago we captured the reprehensible murderer from Givat Asaf and Ofra. For this I commend the [Israel Police] special anti-terror unit, the IDF and especially the ISA, which is the best counter-terrorism organization of its kind in the world. We owe it much. It does its work with professionalism and dedication. There are no grounds for attacks on it”, PM Netanyahu said in a video statement.
Ilanit Mor Yosef, the mother of one of the soldiers murdered in the terror attack, said she had mixed feelings following the news of her son killer’s arrest.
“Unfortunately, this news is not comforting in a country like ours, because in a few years he could be released from prison,” the mother said. “He was already jailed once, but was released, so what’s the point? Who’s going to promise me that he will remain in jail, and that he’s going to suffer there? The conditions in Israeli jails are so good that he was prepared to be captured alive.”
