Rescuers found all 12 boys and their soccer coach alive deep inside a partially flooded cave in northern Thailand late on Monday, more than a week after the team disappeared and touched off a desperate search that drew international help and captivated the nation.

A massive international rescue effort has been underway, with rescue teams battling through thick mud and high water to try to reach the group in the cave network that stretches 10 kilometres into a mountain.

Chang Rai governor Narongsak Osottanakorn told reporters that Thai Navy SEALs had found the group alive but claimed the ‘operation wasn’t over’.

He said: ‘We will bring food to them and a doctor who can dive. I am not sure they can eat as they have not eaten for a while.’

Relatives of the boys, who have been at a shelter near the cave hoping for a breakthrough, were seen cheering, smiling and receiving calls after getting the news. Rescuers shook hands and congratulated each other as occasional cheers broke out.
