Medal of Valor: Elite officer who died heroically in Gaza receives IDF’s top medal
Lt.Col ‘M’, who was killed in action during a failed undercover mission in Gaza last year, was an example of outstanding bravery, courage, and sacrifice. Today, he was posthumously awarded the Chief of the General Staff Citation for his actions in battle.
In a private ceremony, his widow, children, and parents accepted the award in his stead.
In addition, the IDF awarded citations of merit and other commendations to a number of soldiers for their roles in the mission.
According to information approved by the military censor, the covert squad entered into Gaza in a civilian vehicle on November 11, as a part of an undercover operation in disguise on an intelligence-gathering mission and was discovered at a checkpoint near Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza, where the soldiers engaged in a firefight with Hamas terrorists.
Lt. Col. M. was reportedly killed while drawing fire away from his comrades and allowing them to escape.
Another officer made a charge toward M.’s position to try to save him, and after managing to eliminate three terrorists, reached M.’s vehicle but was badly wounded in the process.
According to various reports and statements from senior officials, Lt. Col. M. sacrificed his life to save his comrades.
