Khamenei: The US has been defeated by the Islamic Republic over the past 40 years

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Saturday the United States had failed to reassert its domination of Iran since the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution that toppled the U.S.-backed Shah, state television reported.

“America’s goal has been to re-establish the domination it had (before 1979) but it has failed. America has been defeated by the Islamic Republic over the past 40 years,” it quoted Khamenei as saying in a meeting with thousands of students.

Washington will on Monday reimpose far-reaching sanctions on Iran’s vital oil export and banking sectors to try to force the Islamic Republic to curb its missile and regional activities and accept tougher restraints on its nuclear program.

The Trump administration on Friday announced the restoration of the final round of sanctions on Iran that were lifted under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

The sanctions will target Iran’s crude oil exports and will penalize countries that don’t stop importing oil and foreign companies that do business with certain Iranian entities.

President Trump has repeatedly blasted the deal, which does not do enough to end Iran’s terrorism in the region. At a U.N. Security Council meeting in September, Trump defended his administration’s decision to pull out of the Obama-era deal, and blasted the “horrible, one-sided deal [that] allowed Iran to continue its path toward a [nuclear] bomb and gave the regime a cash lifeline when they needed it the most.”

“They were in big big trouble,” Trump said. “They needed cash, we gave it to them.”
