“I Love Israel!”: Brazilian President Bolsonaro lands in Israel
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro landed Sunday morning in Israel for a four-day visit to the country.
Bolsonaro received red carpet treatment from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Brazilian leader opened his speech after landing with the words “I love Israel” in Hebrew.
The Brazilian president is expected during his three-day trip to decide whether to follow President Donald Trump’s lead and move the Brazilian Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a move he has repeatedly promised.
Earlier this month, a Brazilian government official said no decision had been made on the embassy move, but “something will have to be said about the embassy during the trip”.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added that a formal announcement might not come during the visit.
Netanyahu called Bolsonaro a “good friend” and says Israel and Brazil have entered “a new era” of relations.
“Your arrival will elevate the relationship between our countries to a new height,” Netanyahu said.
Speaking about the tense situation on the Gaza border Netanyahu added: “I have ordered the IDF units deployed to the Gaza border to maintain their positions. We are ready for any development and will do everything in order to maintain our security.”
Netanyahu will, later today, hold a private meeting with President Bolsonaro and will subsequently hold an expanded meeting with ministers from both countries.
Afterward, the Prime Minister and the Brazilian President will participate in the signing of a series of bilateral agreements in the areas of security, aviation, homeland security, science and technology, and will sign MOUs on cyber, health and water.
Netanyahu and his wife will host the Brazilian President for dinner at the Prime Minister’s Residence in Jerusalem where the two will make statements to the media.
Tomorrow Netanyahu and President Bolsonaro will visit the Western Wall, and on Tuesday they will participate in the “Israel-Brazil Innovation Summit”, an economic event between businesspeople and leading companies in Israel and Brazil. The leaders will then visit an innovation exhibition.
