Germany: Cologne train station evacuated amid hostage situation

A woman has been taken hostage at the main train station in the German city of Cologne

Police did not offer details into the number of assailants and hostages. But they described the situation as “unclear.”

Heavily armed police currently surround the station, which has been evacuated and closed off to the public.

It is not yet known if the hostage-taker is armed.

Local media reported shots were fired. Authorities have ordered an evacuation of the central station, which is a main hub for trains across Germany and western Europe. They also appealed to locals to avoid the area and warned of likely disruptions to train services.
