2 killed, 51 hurt in mass-casualty accident on Route 443 near Jerusalem
At least two people were killed and 51 injured when a bus overturned on Route 443 near Beit Horon, between Jerusalem and Modi’in.
Multiple emergency teams and several helicopters were dispatched to the scene to evacuate the victims.
According to an eyewitness, a private car with Palestinian Authority registration plate braked suddenly and two Arabs stepped out of the car. Apparently, the bus driver feared that this might be a shooting attack and tried to evade them.
Avi, another eyewitness said: “I was on the road and was one of the first to arrive at the scene. There was (an initial) accident on the opposite lane in the direction of Modi’in Illit. A rescue vehicle … in the opposite lane had apparently stopped to help with the accident. He stopped suddenly with the bus behind him traveling at about 80kmh. The bus driver instinctively swerved to the right and collided with the safety barrier, and that is what caused it to tip over. Some of the passengers climbed out of the bus themselves, and then the rescue services and army arrived.”
