Israel begins construction of new barrier on the Gaza border to stop Hamas terrorists
The Defense Ministry announced Sunday it has begun constructing the overground portion of the Gaza border barrier.
On Thursday, the Border and Separation Administration in the Defense Ministry began constructing the barrier on the Gaza Strip border, a statement said.
The overground section will be 65 kilometers (40 miles) long and will be 6 meters (20 feet) high.
The project, estimated to cost 3 billion shekels ($833 million), will include a concrete wall fitted with sensors and reaching dozens of meters deep into the ground to prevent terror tunnels from Gaza.
“The border is uniquely suited to the threats from Gaza and will give a comprehensive solution to preventing entry into Israel,” the Defense Ministry’s border administration head said.
The route of the upper barrier will connect to the new world-first underwater barrier near Zikim beach until it reaches the Kerem Shalom crossing.
“Over the weekend we began building the above-ground barrier along the Gaza border. The barrier will prevent terrorists from Gaza from penetrating into our territory on the ground”, PM Netanyahu said today at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting.
I would also like to make it clear: If the quiet is not maintained in Gaza, we will make the decisions even in the elections period and will not hesitate to act”.
