? Staff Sgt. Aviv Levi HY”D named as Givati soldier murdered by sniper fire from Muslim terrorists in Gaza
The soldier who was murdered by sniper fire from Muslim terrorists in Gaza on Friday was named Saturday evening as 20-year-old Staff Sgt. Aviv Levi, from Petah Tikvah.
Staff Sgt. Levi, a Givati soldier, was supposed to celebrate his 21st birthday in two weeks and was only three months away from his IDF release.
Levi was the first IDF fatality on the Gaza front since Operation Protective Edge in 2014.
“He planned to work and make his dream come true of traveling South America with his friends,” said one friend.
Staff Sgt. Levi was murdered during operational activity near southern Gaza.
A terrorist squad shot at IDF troops during violent Muslim riots along the security border fence, and the IDF soldier was critically injured.
The IDF said Levi, who was wearing a ceramic vest, was killed by a bullet to the chest. A helicopter was initially called to evacuate him, but he was pronounced dead in the field.
In response, the IDF struck 60 sites in 3 Hamas battalion compounds. The targets included weapon manufacturing sites, a shaft to a tunnel network, a factory used for underground infrastructure manufacturing, a UAV warehouse, military operations room, training facilities, and observation posts.
A ceasefire agreement was reached after Egyptian and United Nations mediation, a spokesman for Gaza’s Islamist rulers Hamas said.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the death of Staff Sergeant Aviv Levi:
“I sent heartfelt condolences on behalf of the citizens of Israel to the parents and brothers of Aviv Levi.” Netanyahu said.
“Aviv fought with with determination and bravery against terrorism from the Gaza Strip, and unfortunately, this struggle sometimes exacts an unbearable price on us,” concluded the prime minister.
Staff Sergeant Aviv Levi will be buried on Sunday at 12PM in the military section of the Segula cemetery in Petah Tikva.
