The Argentine National Sports Secretary and the Argentinean Football Association, or AFA, received a letter Friday signed by the Argentinian Committee of Solidarity with Palestinian terrorism requesting the cancellation of the football game featuring the Argentine national team in Jerusalem against the Israeli team.

Playing against Israel and visiting the Western Wall brought happiness to Argentine football. In 1986, the team played against Israel in the last friendly match before the World Cup that year. Argentina won 7-2 in Ramat Gan, then the team headed by Diego Maradona won the World Cup in Mexico.

In 1990, still with Carlos Bilardo as a coach and Diego Maradona in the team, Israel played against Argentina in the last friendly of the season.

Argentina won 2-1 before the World Cup in Italy that Argentina lost in the final against Germany. In 1994, coach Alfio Basile also chose to play against Israel before the United States World Cup.

Neither side has issued an official announcement yet regarding the World Cup warm-up match that has attracted huge interest among Israeli fans, mainly because of Messi’s planned participation, but the game is largely expected to be cancelled.
