Sweden: Explosion outside Stockholm metro station as man picks hand grenade up off the floor
A man has died and his wife injured after a hand grenade exploded outside a metro station in Stockholm.
A man, 60, and a woman, 45, have been taken to hospital following the incident outside Varby Gard underground station in Huddinge, greater Stockholm.
The man was rushed to hospital in a serious condition but later died from multiple injuries sustained in the blast.
They were injured when the explosive device was picked up from the ground this morning, reports claim.
Officials say the blast is not believed to be terror-related –ed: just the result of cultural enrichment–.
The female victim was said to have suffered wounds to her face and lower body.
Police do not believe the incident was a planned attack on the two people injured.
Rescue official Lars-Ake Stevelind told Swedish broadcaster SVT that ‘someone has used some type of explosive material’ for the object and that police were investigating it.
