Hungarian-Croatian border closed to ‘illegal’ migrants

The border between Hungary and Croatia has been closed to “illegal” migrants, the Hungarian government said early Saturday, with barbed wire fences being set up to seal the frontier.

“The ‘green border’ has been closed (to economic migrants) but you can still cross the border legally and seek asylum,” government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs told AFP.

Whereas Slovenia on Friday suspended its rail links with Croatia ahead of the anticipated arrival of large numbers of migrants being rerouted towards the Alpine country after Hungary announced it would close its border with Croatia.

“Given the exceptional circumstances, the passenger traffic between Croatia and Slovenia has been suspended,” Slovenia’s national rail company said on its website, adding it had taken the decision “in coordination with the authorities”.
