Israeli Ambassador to US sends ‘settlement’ holiday gifts
Israeli Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer earlier this week posted a letter on Twitter together with a picture of the wrapped holiday gifts he is sending out – which include goods from Judea, Samaria and the Golan Heights.
In the Twitter post on Monday, Dermer made it clear his gifts were meant to respond to the BDS “fanatics and fools” seeking to boycott and harm Israel, in a particularly timely issue given the EU’s recent decision to label Jewish goods from the region.
“This holiday season, I decided to send a gift that would also help combat the latest effort by Israel’s enemies to destroy the one and only Jewish state,” wrote Dermer in his letter.
“The main forces behind this movement are fanatics who actively seek to eliminate Israel. Unfortunately, they are occasionally joined by fools who naively believe that in promoting BDS, they are advancing peace between Israelis and Palestinians,” he added.
“The fanatics and the fools are simply promoting a new anti-Semitism. Once Jews were singled out and held to a different standard than other peoples. Today, the Jewish state is singled out and held to a different standard than other countries.”
Dermer’s comments note the hypocrisy of the EU labeling decision, which he termed “the most recent case of this.”
Earlier this month the EU double-standard was put on display as a top European court struck down a trade deal with Morocco in the occupied Western Sahara, and the EU responded by petitioning the ruling. The move shows the discriminatory nature of the labeling only against Israel.
Legal experts revealed the ruling undermines the EU’s claims that its labeling of Israel and taking other punitive actions are due to a principle of “non-recognition,” since the court decision shows that it can and does do business with “occupiers.”
Dermer called the labeling “all the more shameful” because “Israel upholds the highest democratic values in the darkest region on earth and while facing threats faced by no other nation.”
In order “to cast a beacon of freedom, tolerance and decency as a pariah state, I have decided this holiday season to send you products that were made in Judea, Samaria and the Golan Heights. I hope you will enjoy them,” concluded the ambassador.
