Officers injured in shooting in Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood

Police on Friday swarmed the scene of an “active shooter” situation they said was unfolding near a Planned Parenthood center in Colorado Springs, and the Denver Post reported that at least one officer had been wounded by gunfire.

The Colorado Springs Police Department said in a Twitter post that a call for assistance referred to a person firing a gun in the city’s northwest, on Centennial Boulevard, where the Planned Parenthood office is located.

“The area is NOT secure. Media do not stage in the area,” the police department said in its tweet, adding that the area was “not secure” and urging members of the public in a nearby shopping center to “shelter in place.”

No further details were immediately available from official sources, but the Denver Post reported that at least one police officer had been injured in “an ongoing active shooter situation.”

The Post quoted Colorado Springs police spokeswoman Lieutenant Catherine Buckley as saying the situation was fluid, adding, “We still have a gunman that is out there.”

Brigette Wolfe, who works across the street from the scene, told CNN she could see law enforcement officers including police SWAT teams deployed in the area.

A gunman, barricaded in the shopping area near the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic, has reopened fire about two hours since the shooting broke out. At least three policemen and unknown number of civilians have been injured so far.

Three hostages have been rescued from a bathroom, police said on the scanner. Live feed from the site shows several people being taken into ambulances.

“We are exchanging gunfire,” an officer said on the police scanner, which was confirmed by Buckley.

At least five victims have been brought to Penrose-St. Francis Hospital, while at least three patients have arrived at Memorial Hospital, KRDO reported. The conditions of the transportees have not been announced.

The New York Police Department has redeployed its Critical Response Vehicles from Black Friday protests to Planned Parenthood clinics as a precaution, the NYPD said.

Colorado Springs, about 70 miles south of Denver, was the scene of a mass shooting on Oct. 31 in which a gunman killed three people near downtown before dying in a shootout with police.

The city is home to the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Olympic training center.
