Brazil’s President Bolsonaro tested positive for Coronavirus

Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro has tested positive for the coronavirus after having shown symptoms, following months of downplaying the severity of the pandemic despite the country’s skyrocketing death toll.

On Monday, the president personally told its reporters he was suffering from symptoms of the coronavirus, including a fever.

The presidential palace confirmed that a test took place after he felt unwell. The statement added Bolsonaro was at home and “in good health.”

Bolsonaro has repeatedly played down the impact of the virus, even as Brazil has suffered one of the world’s worst outbreaks, with more than 1.6 million confirmed cases and 65,000 deaths.

In recent months, several of Bolsonaro’s aides have become infected with Covid-19. However, the president has often been seen defying restrictions such as mask-wearing and social distancing, calling the virus “just little flu.”
