44 fatalities, 7,589 Israelis infected with coronavirus, 115 in serious condition

The number of coronavirus infections in Israel has risen to 7,589 by Saturday afternoon, with 44 fatalities and 115 people in serious condition, including 98 patients on ventilators.

An 89-year-old woman died at a geriatric hospital in Yaffo, bringing the death toll from coronavirus to 44, the Health Ministry said. She is the fifth fatality who contracted the virus at Mishan nursing home in Beer Sheva.

The government declared the highly infected ultra-orthodox city of Bnei Brak “restricted zone”. Residents of Bnei Brak are allowed to leave the city to receive medical treatment, attend a funeral of a first-degree relative or for legal proceedings.

Interior Minister Aryeh Deri and Defense Minister Naftali Bennett ordered the evacuation of some 4,500 elderly people aged 80 and over from Bnei Brak in order to protect them. The residents will be relocated to a designated hotel operated by the IDF Homefront Command.

The rest of the city’s population between the ages of 60 and 80, must remain in strict home quarantine.

About 60 roadblocks have been set up around the city and more than 1,000 police officers have been deployed there to enforce the Health Ministry’s guidelines.
