Tokyo 2020 Olympics postponed to 2021 due to the coronavirus

BREAKING: The 2020 Olympic Games will be postponed by one year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Senior International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound said that “on the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided.”

“The parameters going forward have not been determined,” he added. “But the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.”

Canada and Australia had already announced their decision to withdraw from this summer’s Games.

Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe told his country’s parliament yesterday that a postponement would be unavoidable if the event cannot be held in a complete way.

The spread of the coronavirus is accelerating, the World Health Organization has said, with more than 16,000 deaths, over 300,000 cases recorded and infections reported from nearly every country worldwide.
