US, Afghan troops come under attack during a counter-terrorism operation – Fatalities reported
BREAKING: A combined US and Afghan force conducting a counter-terrorism operation in eastern Afghanistan came under attack by Taliban terrorists.
According to initial reports, five or six American soldiers were killed in the attack, with others critically wounded.
The US military confirmed the incident — “A combined US and AFghan force conducting an operation in Nangarhar was engaged by direct fire”, without providing any details.
Two American soldiers were killed and two others wounded last month in a roadside bomb attack on a US Army convoy in southern Afghanistan.
Last year was the deadliest in five years for the US in Afghanistan. Twenty-three service members were killed in 2019 during operations in the country.
The attack was the latest in near-daily attacks by the Taliban terror group who now hold sway in almost half of Afghanistan, despite stepped-up efforts by the United States to find a negotiated end to the country’s 17-year war.
