40,000 Jews gather in Hevron to mark biblical purchase of Cave of the Patriarchs
Tens of thousands of Jewish Israelis and visitors came to Hevron and the Tomb of the Patriarchs in a yearly pilgrimage to mark the reading of the week’s Torah portion.
This Shabbat, Jews around the world read the Torah portion Chayei Sarah, in which the Biblical patriarch Abraham buys the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hevron in order to bury his dead wife Sarah.
The Jewish community of Hevron announced that some 40,000 people participated in the pilgrimage. Large tents were set up for group meals, where families and groups set themselves to camp out for the festive Shabbat.
