Syria: 11 Iranian and Assad militias eliminated during Israeli retaliatory strikes
Israel bombed dozens of Iranian targets in Syria on Wednesday in response to rocket fire on the Golan Heights the day before. At least 11 Iranian and pro-Assad militias were eliminated in the strikes.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 7 out of 11 killed were “foreign nationals” and are believed to be Iranians.
“We cannot confirm whether the seven foreigners killed are all Iranians or pro-Iranian fighters of different nationalities,” the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said.
Earlier, IDF spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Avichay Adraee said Israeli fighter jets had hit multiple targets belonging to the Iranian Quds Force – the overseas arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards terror group – and the Assad army, including surface-to-air missiles, weapons warehouses and military bases.
“The attack was carried out in response to the launching of rockets by an Iranian force from Syria’s territory into Israel, intending to strike Israeli territory,” the IDF said in a statement.
“We are prepared to operate as necessary to defend Israel and the region, against Iranian entrenchment”, the IDF added.
Sources across the political spectrum in Syria acknowledge that Israel essentially wiped out Syrian air defense capabilities in a matter of minutes during the retaliatory strikes.
“Since the internet is blocked by the Iranian regime, most Iranians will likely not know the fate of Quds Force infrastructure in Syria, and how the regime wastes Iranian money on foreign aggression”, IDF spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Conricus tweeted.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said after the attack: “I made it clear that whoever harms us – we will harm. This is what we did tonight against military targets of Iran’s Quds force and Syrian military targets in Syria, after rockets were fired at Israel last night.”
On Tuesday, four rockets fired from Syria towards northern Israel were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system.
According to Arab reports, the sirens followed Israeli strikes on Iranian targets near Damascus Airport.
Israeli military correspondents said that Israel was not responsible for the bombing in Damascus and that the Iranian rocket attack towards the Golan was in response to a “secret event” that occurred during the last 36 hours, which Israel, Iran and Syria are all aware of.
