Hungary: 50 neo-Nazis attack Jewish community center in Budapest
BREAKING: Some 50 members of a neo-Nazi group attacked “Aurora”, a Jewish community center in Budapest.
The neo-Nazis burned a flag and sprayed graffiti.
According to local reports, the Police refrained from intervening for several minutes.
“The U.S. Embassy Budapest is deeply troubled by the attack yesterday on the Aurora community center in Budapest. The center, run by a Jewish youth group, is an umbrella organization that provides office space to other small civil society groups in Budapest. The attack on a place that provides needed space and support to minorities that seek to exercise their rights is reprehensible. We call on authorities to safeguard the rights of Aurora and all civil society organizations in Hungary.”
Two days later, also the Israeli Embassy in Hungary issued a condemnation:
“The Israeli Embassy condemns in the strongest terms possible the attack on the Aurora community center, run by a Jewish youth group. It is regrettable that a neo nazi group used the commemoration of the heroic Hungarian 1956 revolution as a pretext for this act of violence. This is unacceptable”.
