Facebook, Instagram remove Iranian accounts targeting audiences across the world with lies
Facebook announced it has removed hundreds of accounts from Iran and Russia on both Facebook and Instagram, used to target audiences across the world with lies.
The networks were targeting the U.S., North Africa, and Latin America. Three of the networks were Iranian, while one was Russian.
“Today, we removed four separate networks of accounts, Pages, and Groups for engaging in coordinated inauthentic behavior on Facebook and Instagram. All of these operations created networks of accounts to mislead others about who they were and what they were doing”, Facebook Inc said in a statement.
The social media platform has recently been cracking down on such accounts in many countries after coming under fire in the last two years for its self-admitted sluggishness in developing tools to combat extremist content and propaganda operations.
