Brazil: Masked gunman takes 37 passengers hostage, threatens to burn bus
A Brazilian police sniper shot and neutralized a masked gunman who held dozens of people hostage on a public bus in Rio de Janeiro, officials said.
All of the hostages were released unharmed, Rio de Janeiro State Military Police said.
The hostage situation began around 5:30 a.m. local time Tuesday on a busy bridge linking Niteroi to downtown Rio de Janeiro.
The masked gunman was holding 37 people hostage and threatened to set the vehicle on fire.
Armed police surrounded the vehicle and started negotiating with the hostage-taker, who identified himself as a policeman.
Officials said the hostage-taker has not made any particular demands and has identified himself as a policeman but this has not been confirmed.
