Terror attack thwarted: Israel busts Hamas cell planning suicide bombing in Jerusalem
BREAKING – Cleared for publication: The Shin Bet has arrested in Hevron a Hamas terror cell that planned to perpetrate a bombing attack in Jerusalem and carry out terror attacks against Israeli and Palestinian Authority targets.
Other Hamas cells were also arrested and a Hamas explosives lab has been uncovered.
The Muslim terrorists in Judea and Samaria were instructed to form cells in order to carry out kidnapping, shooting, stabbings, purchase weapons and to recruit additional terrorists, the Shin Bet said.
One of the terrorists, university student Tamer Rajah, was arrested in June, leading to additional arrests of other Hamas terrorists, including other students.
“During his arrest, Tamer handed over an explosive device that weighs three kilograms, which had dozens of pieces of metal attached to it to maximize fragmentation and injury in the explosion. The device was meant to be used to carry out a bombing attack,” the Shin Bet said in a statement.
Tamer had been recruited by Hamas to act as a bomb-maker for the terror group and had trained to make bombs.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Israeli security services for thwarting the terror attack.
“I commend the Shin Bet, IDF and Israel Police forces for the operational-intelligence effort that led to the thwarting of a terrorist attack that Hamas planned to carry out on our territory,” the prime minister said in a statement.
“Our enemies should know that our long arm will reach whoever tries to attack us.”
“Jerusalem is a city sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Hamas terrorists had a bomb ready, planning to carry out an attack on this Holy City. Together with the Israel Security Agency, we foiled the attack and arrested the terrorists”, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit tweeted.
