IDF: Elimination of Hamas terrorist approaching the border a ‘misunderstanding’
The IDF on Thursday said the elimination of an armed Hamas terrorist near the Gaza border appears to be a “misunderstanding”.
According to the IDF, the terrorist, a senior member of the Hamas armed wing Izz ad-Din al-Qassam, whose sole mission is to murder Jews, was trying to prevent other Muslim terrorists from breaching the security border fence.
The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit confirmed that troops opened fire at two armed terrorists who were seen walking toward the security border fence east of Beit Hanoun.
“An initial inquiry suggests that the IDF troops who arrived at the location misidentified the Hamas restraint operative to be an armed terrorist and fired as a result of this misunderstanding. The incident will be reviewed,” the IDF said in a statement.
“We will not allow this shooting to go without a response, and Israel will pay for its actions,” the terror group said.
The terrorist has been identified as 28-year-old Mahmoud al-Adham, a senior member of al-Qassam.
Following the incident, the IDF ordered all engineering units and personnel working along the security fence to leave the border area immediately.
Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other terror groups and factions in Gaza vowed that their terrorists would retaliate and have gathered in the joint operations room to discuss a response to the event.
According to Arab reports, all Hamas terror facilities were evacuated ahead of an expected response from the terrorist factions.
