Iran threatens to seize UK oil tanker after Royal Marines seize Iranian tanker carrying oil to Syria
A senior commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps terror group threatened that it would be Tehran’s “duty” to seize a British oil tanker if an Iranian tanker carrying oil to Syria detained in Gibraltar was not immediately released.
“If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the (Iranian) authorities duty to seize a British oil tanker,” Mohsen Rezai tweeted.
British Royal Marines seized an Iranian supertanker suspected of carrying oil to Syria off the coast of Gibraltar, a dramatic step that drew Tehran’s fury.
Tehran responded by summoning Britain’s ambassador to its foreign ministry to explain what it described as an “illegal seizure”, which had been earlier described by the UK as enforcing the EU’s sanctions regime against Syria.
Iran on Monday announced its low-enriched uranium stockpile had exceeded limits set in the deal, which was designed to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons in exchange for sanctions relief.
The move was a bid to persuade Europe, Russia, and China to follow through on sanctions relief, but the Trump administration responded by saying its “maximum pressure” campaign would remain.
PM Netanyahu said on Monday that Iran is taking a significant step toward nuclear weapons and called on all European countries to uphold their commitment.
“You committed to act the moment Iran violated the nuclear agreement. You committed to imposing the automatic sanctions set out by the Security Council. Then I say to you: Do it. Just do it,” Netanyahu said.
