President Trump signs order imposing major new sanctions targeting Iran’s supreme leader
President Donald Trump imposed new sanctions on Iran on Monday targeting Iran’s supreme leader and his associates with financial sanctions, the latest action the US has taken to pressure Tehran from developing nuclear weapons and supporting terror groups.
“Today’s action follows a series of aggressive behaviors by the Iranian regime in recent weeks including shooting down a U.S. drone,” the president said in the Oval Office.
The president said Iran’s supreme leader Khamenei was responsible for “the hostile conduct of the regime” and the sanctions will deny him “access to key financial resources and support”.
“Never can Iran have a nuclear weapon,” President Trump said.
“They are the number one sponsor of terror anywhere in the world.”
He added: “We do not seek conflict with Iran or any other country. I look forward to the day when sanctions can finally be lifted and Iran can become a peaceful, prosperous and productive nation.”
On Friday, President Trump did not order a missile strike against Iran, claiming that he did not want to kill an estimated 150 Iranians in retaliation for a downed unmanned drone.
