BREAKING: A senior Iranian security official said on Monday Tehran had recently exposed and dismantled a “large US cyber espionage network”.
The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, was quoted as saying by the state broadcaster IRIB that several CIA agents were arrested after Tehran shared intelligence with its allies.
“Given the cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and other countries in creating an ‘international organisation to counter American espionage’, we provided our partners with information that led to the disclosure and dismantling of a network of CIA officers, as well as detention and punishment of several spies in different countries”, the senior official said.
He did not specify how many CIA agents were arrested and in what countries.
The development comes days after two oil tankers were attacked by Iran in the Gulf of Oman, near the Strait of Hormuz. The Royal Navy will deploy 100 Marines to the Persian Gulf to protect British ships after the Iranian attack, raising the threat of war.
