4 commercial ships including oil tankers ‘sabotaged’ near UAE territorial waters
The United Arab Emirates says that four commercial ships, including oil tankers “were subjected to sabotage operations” near UAE territorial waters in the Gulf of Oman, east of Fujairah.
A statement by the state-run WAM news agency did not say who the UAE suspected of carrying out the sabotage or identify the ships involved.
The statement said there had been “no injuries or fatalities on board the vessels” and “no spillage of harmful chemicals or fuel.”
Earlier Sunday, pro-Iran Lebanese media and Iranian media falsely reported there had been explosions at oil tankers at the port of Fujairah.
In an advisory posted on Thursday, the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) said that since early May there had been an increased possibility of Iran or its regional proxies taking action against U.S. and partner interests.
The US has approved a new deployment of Patriot missiles to the Middle East, in the latest US response to a growing threat from Iran.
