President Trump: Time for the US to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan
It is time for the US to “fully recognize” Israeli sovereignty on the Golan Heights, US President Donald Trump tweeted, confirming a shift in American foreign policy that has been hinted at for several weeks.
“After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!” President Trump tweeted, as his secretary of state Mike Pompeo prepared to deliver a joint address from Jerusalem with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Thank you, President Trump!”, Netanyahu responded to the move on Twitter.
Earlier today, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was joined by PM Netanyahu on a visit to the Western Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City in the first such gesture since Washington recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, angering the Muslim world.
They then toured the Western Wall tunnels and Wilson’s Arch excavations and visited the Shaarei Teshuva synagogue in the tunnels.
Israel captured 1,200 square kilometers (460 square miles) of the Golan Heights from Syria in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognized by the international community.
Last week, the State Department changed its description of the Golan Heights from “Israeli-occupied” areas to “Israeli-controlled” areas– for the first time in history. This change in terminology was made in an annual global human rights report released by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
