Ambassador summoned over Netanyahu’s remarks on Poland’s active role in the Holocaust

The Ambassador of Israel in Poland, Anna Azari, has been summoned to the Polish foreign ministry. According to reports, she will be given an official note that the Polish ultra-nationalist government demands that Netanyahu clarifies his statement on Poland’s collaboration with the Nazis.

“Here I am saying Poles cooperated with the Nazis. I know the history and I don’t whitewash it. I bring it up,” Netanyahu said Thursday at the Warsaw conference on the Middle East.

Netanyahu made the remark in response to a question regarding the Holocaust denial law, in which the current Polish ultra-nationalist government attempts to rewrite history and downplay the collaboration of Poles with the Nazis during World War II.

Last year, Polish lawmakers voted to water down the Holocaust denial law following pressure from Israel and the United States, and removed parts that imposed jail terms on people who mention Poland’s active role in the Holocaust and make the use of phrases such as “Polish Death Camps” to refer to the Polish death camps, punishable.

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said Friday that if Netanyahu had indeed suggested that Poles collaborated with the Nazis during the Holocaust [as they did], the summit of leaders of the Weisgrad, due to be held in Israel next week, should be cancelled. The leaders of Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia are also expected to attend the summit.

Netanyahu’s departure from Warsaw to Israel was delayed after a towing vehicle hit the plane’s wheel on the runway.

El Al announced that another plane is making its way to Poland in order to bring PM Netanyahu, his entourage and accompanying journalists back to Israel before the start of Shabbat.
