Over the course of the weekend, the IDF thwarted an offensive terror tunnel belonging to the Hamas terror group that infiltrated Israeli territory from northern Gaza near Nahal Oz.
This terror tunnel put the lives of hundreds of Israeli families at risk.
The route of the terror tunnel was identified by security forces early on and monitored thereafter.
The tunnel was excavated after Operation Protective Edge near the town of Jabalia in the northern strip and crossed into Israeli territory, mere meters from the border fence, where mass protests took place over the past several weeks.
The tunnel was the eighth discovered and destroyed in the past few months. Three of the eight tunnels were destroyed in Gaza, with the remaining five leveled inside Israel.
In recent months and especially over the last weeks, Hamas has turned the area near the security fence into an area of terror and fighting.
The violent riots that have been taking place in the area of the security fence are an attempt to mask the terror attacks intended to take place above and below ground.
“The IDF will not allow Israeli civilians to be harmed or Israeli sovereignty to be breached and will continue operating with determination in the face of all forms of terrorism”, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said in a statement.
The IDF is engaged in a systematic, operational, intelligence, and technological effort aimed at identifying and thwarting terror tunnels and constructing an underground security barrier to protect Israel.
The Hamas terror organization continues to invest significant resources into its futile terror activities instead of investing in the well-being of its own people.
“The IDF will continue operating to carry out its mission of protecting Israeli civilians and Israeli sovereignty whilst striving to ensure a stable security situation and preparedness for a variety of scenarios”.
“Over the weekend the IDF thwarted another tunnel from the Gaza Strip toward Israel. We are operating in all sectors on behalf of Israel’s security and we underscore our backing for the IDF soldiers who are guarding our borders”, PM Netanyahu said at the start of the weekly Security Cabinet meeting.
“We open the week with impressive intelligence and operational achievements, with the destruction of another terrorist tunnel, the longest and deepest one ever uncovered”, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman tweeted.
Liberman added that millions of dollars were invested in digging the tunnel, which instead of alleviating the distress of the residents, has sunk into the sand.
“Residents of Gaza: Hamas is burning your money on tunnels leading nowhere. We’ll catch them all,” Liberman concluded.
While the tunnel neutralized contained no armaments, the IDF said it was equipped for carrying out terror attack in the immediate future. The tunnel was located through strategic means rather than the new underground anti-tunnel barrier.
