IDF reveals: Iranian drone downed in February was armed with explosives

The Iranian drone that Israel fired a Patriot anti-ballistic missile at,  in the Golan Heights, Israel’s northern region bordering Syria in early February, was armed with explosives and was sent to carry out a sabotage attack in Israel, the IDF Spokesperson’s Office said Friday.

“The interception of the Iranian unmanned aircraft by an attack helicopter prevented an Iranian intent to carry out an attack in the territory of the State of Israel,” read a statement by the army.

The advanced Iranian UAV was identified and monitored by Israeli defense systems until it was intercepted and “did not pose a danger” while it was inside Israeli territory, the army statement added.

The events of February 10 began in the early morning hours when an Iranian drone infiltrated Israel. An IAF helicopter shot it down, while fighter jets were scrambled to attack 12 Syrian and Iranian targets in Syria in retaliation. On their way back to base, the Israeli planes came under Syrian anti-aircraft fire, with one missile exploding near one of the planes and bringing it down.

In retaliation, the IDF attacked Iranian targets in Syria.  “We have attacked the Iranian trailer from which the drone was launched. The assault was complex and surgical. The target was destroyed”, the IDF said.

The pilot and navigator were able to bail out of the plane before it crashed near Kibbutz Harduf.

“In the course of the incident, pilots of an F-16 initiated an ejection protocol from their helicopter, which was downed in the Beit Netofa Valley region. The pilots are in IDF hands, and in good physical condition”. The reason for the ejection is as yet unclear. In addition, a Syrian antiaircraft missile landed in the Golan Heights.”
