Israeli security officials say Muslim terrorist eliminated during Gaza border riots was a senior figure in Hamas terror group – not a journalist.
Muslim journalist-terrorist Yasser Murtaja died on Saturday after being wounded by IDF fire on Friday while allegedly covering the violent riots along the Israel-Gaza border, health officials said.
On Saturday, the IDF said a probe into the incident was launched. “The IDF does not intentionally fire on journalists. The circumstances in which journalists were hit, allegedly by IDF fire, are unknown to us and are being examined,” the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said in a statement.
On Tuesday, however, Israeli security officials pushed back on the claim, saying Murtaja was in fact a long-time member of the Hamas terror group who held the rank of Neqqib, or Captain, in Hamas. He tried to smuggle a drone for Hamas in 2015.
“We have seen dozens of cases in which Hamas uses ambulances or disguises journalists – we will not take any risks,” Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said Saturday.
“The IDF is the most moral army in the world. We are prepared for 200 demonstrations.”
“I do not know who he is, a photographer or not a photographer. Anyone who runs towards IDF forces knows he was endangering himself. There have been cases when terrorists disguised themselves as journalists.”
