BREAKING: NBCNews has quoted unnamed US officials as confirming that Israel carried out the airstrikes on an Iranian air base in Syria on Monday, and the US was informed of the forthcoming strikes in advance.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters that the air strike carried out on Sunday on a Syrian air base was a “dangerous development”.
“I hope the US understands this,” he said, adding that there was no need for an investigation to find out who carried out the strike in Homs.
Moscow earlier attributed the attack to Israel. When asked about the explosions, an Israeli spokeswoman declined to comment.
The US Pentagon said it was not conducting air strikes in Syria “at this time,” formally denying the Syrian state television report.
Syrian state TV said there were casualties in what it said was a suspected US missile attack on a major air base in central Syria but the United States denied it had launched any air strikes against the country.
The state broadcaster earlier said explosions were heard at the T-4 airfield near Homs, which is close to the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH), at least 14 military personnel, including Iranians, were among those killed in the strike that took place shortly before dawn.
