A Muslim Uber driver admits murdering British Embassy worker and attempting to rape her before strangling her and ditching her body on the side of a motorway in Beirut.
Rebecca Dykes was abducted after leaving a party in the city before being strangled and dumped by the side of a motorway on the outskirts of the Lebanese capital. Police are investigating whether she was sexually assaulted.
Police arrested a Muslim man, believed to be an Uber driver named only as Tarek H, in a 3am raid today.
According to Lebanon’s NNA agency he has admitted picking the diplomat up in his taxi, attempting to rape her and then strangling her before ditching her body by the roadside.
The body of 30-year-old Rebecca Dykes was found beside a motorway north of the city with a rope around her neck, officials said Monday.
In an emailed statement, Uber said it was working with authorities “to assist their investigation in any way we can.” Lebanese media reported that the suspect, a Lebanese citizen, was an Uber driver. Police have refused to confirm or deny those reports, or say whether the man had a criminal record.
Rebecca was last seen at a bar in Beirut’s Gemayze district Friday night. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said the driver picked her up and drove to a nearby neighborhood where she lived, but did not drop her off there.
Instead, the Uber driver drove the car to the site where Dykes’ body was later found.
