President Rivlin visits Jewish center hit by 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks

President Reuven Rivlin on Monday visited an Indian Jewish center that was one of the sites targeted during the 2008 attacks in Mumbai, when members of the Muslim-Pakistani al-Qaida affiliated Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group carried out a series of 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks on luxury hotels, the main railway station, a Jewish center and other sites in the country’s financial capital.

During his visit at the Nariman Chabad House, Rivlin unveiled a memorial plaque commemorating the six Jewish victims who were killed after terrorists took hostages at the site, saying that terrorism is terrorism, regardless of where of whom it hits.

The victims of the attack included Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka Holtzberg, who was six months pregnant at the time, as well as four residents and guests of the Chabad House.

The couple’s two-year-old was saved by his local nanny, who hid with him in a closet when the terrorists began shooting.

Rivlin and First Lady Nechama Rivlin arrived last week Monday in India for a state visit at the invitation of Indian President Pranab Mukherjee.

Earlier this year, Austrian prosecutors said they are probing a possible link between a Pakistani held in Salzburg in connection with last November’s terror attacks in Paris and the 2008 attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai.

“Leads pointing to this are being looked into,” prosecutors in Salzburg said, adding however that the identity of the Pakistani terrorist, who has been in custody since December in the western Austrian city, has not been confirmed.

“Wide-ranging investigations on this question, among others, are ongoing, although the public prosecutors’ office has been waiting for information on this from Pakistan since December 2015,” they said in a statement.

A source in Paris and the Sunday Times said that the Muslim terrorist is thought to be a bomb maker for Pakistani terrorist organisations Lashkar-e-Taiba and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.

India holds Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), linked to Al-Qaida, responsible for the 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi is responsible for a string of high-profile attacks in recent years.
