Egypt arrests hundreds over terror ties, plot to assassinate president

Nearly 300 Egyptian terrorists linked to the ISIS have been sent to a military tribunal over an attempt to assassinate President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi  and other attacks, according to official state media.

The 292 terrorists were also accused of planning to murder Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef.

Authorities said they believe the suspects are part of ISIS group’s Sinai affiliate, which has claimed responsibility for a number of terror attacks and assassinations.  The group has also participated in major clashes with the Egyptian military.

Earlier this month, at least 50 ISIS terrorists were killed and dozens more wounded by Egyptian army shelling in the Sinai Peninsula. A month earlier, Egyptian airstrikes reportedly killed about 100 Muslim terrorists in several towns in the Sinai.

Previously known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the terror group pledged allegiance to ISIS in 2014. Since then, the ISIS branch in Sinai has killed hundreds of soldiers and police using roadside bombs, sniper attacks, suicide car bombs, and even man-portable surface-to-air missiles and anti-tank grenade launchers.

The terror group was also involved in taking down a Russian passenger plane in October 2015, killing all 224 people on board.
