UK: 14-year-old arrested for tossing fireworks at Jewish pedestrians
London Police have arrested a 14-year-old boy in the neighborhood of Hackney after he was caught throwing fireworks at Jewish passersby.
The teen was detained by the London Shomrim, a neighborhood watch for Jewish communities. No one was injured during the incident.
“A 14-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated common assault and possession of a firework in the street,” said police, according to Jewish News Online. “He was taken to a north London police station and subsequently released on police bail to a date in early March.”
The Hackney neighborhood has had to deal with a growing problem of antisemitism over the past year. Antisemitic crimes have gone up 88% in 2015 compared to the previous year, according to Metropolitan police figures, especially in the Samford Hill area, which is predominantly Orthodox Jewish.
