❌Outrage: Pence invites Messianic ‘rabbi’ to pray for Jewish worshipers murdered in Pittsburgh synagogue

Vice President Mike Pence sparked outrage on Monday for appearing at a campaign rally in Michigan at which a Messianic ‘rabbi’ invoked Jesus in his prayer for the 11 Jewish worshipers murdered at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, making the prayer not only controversial but extremely offensive as well.

Pence, who has often proclaimed himself to be a born-again evangelical Christian, invited Rabbi Loren Jacobs to the stage at a rally in Waterford Township, a suburb of Detroit, for Lena Epstein, a Republican candidate for the open congressional seat in Michigan’s 11th District.

Wearing a Jewish tallit, the founder and senior rabbi of the Messianic Congregation Shema Yisrael, opened by invoking “God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob, God and father of my lord and savior Yeshua, Jesus the Messiah, and my God and father, too.”

Messianic Jews, commonly known as “Jews for Jesus,” are not considered Jewish at all by mainstream Jewish groups, and their embrace by evangelical Christians is often considered offensive, even anti-Semitic.

When asked about Jacobs’ inflammatory presence, the Vice President Mike Pence’s spokesman tweeted that he was not invited to “speak on behalf of the Jewish community.”

Detroit-area Rabbi Jason Miller said on Facebook that there are at least 60 rabbis on a directory of Michigan rabbis and “yet the only rabbi they could find to offer a prayer for the 11 Jewish victims in Pittsburgh at the Mike Pence rally was a local Jews for Jesus rabbi? That’s pathetic!”
