❌ Egyptian actress faces 5 years in jail for wearing revealing dress to Cairo Film Festival

Egyptian film star Rania Youssef has been charged with public obscenity after she attended the Cairo Film Festival wearing a sheer dress that revealed her legs.

Rania Youssef wore a black beaded dress that was opaque at the top and sheer on the bottom half at the closing ceremony of the festival on Thursday, exposing what some commentators described as a swimsuit beneath it.

Youssef is now set to stand trial on January 12 after a group of hardline Muslim lawyers filed a complaint to the chief prosecutor.

She faces up to five years in prison if she is convicted of  “inciting immorality” and “promoting vice” in the Muslim-majority country.

The Egyptian Actors’ Syndicate also weighed in, without naming Youssef or any other celebrity.

“The appearance of some of the festival’s guests did not agree with the traditions and values of the society, and this has undermined the festival and the union which is responsible for its member’s behavior,” it said in a statement.

Youssef, who is a member of the union, later issued an “apology” on her official Twitter account to the “many -Muslims- angered” by her appearance.

“I probably miscalculated when I chose to wear this dress. It was the first time that I wore it and I did not realize it would spark so much anger,” she said.

“I reaffirm my commitment to the values upon which we were raised in Egyptian society,” she added.
